In the AFA Community online talk titled Futureproof your Brand – Navigating EPR Legislation & Digital Product Passports as an Independent Designer, Annabel Robinson, founder of the fashion agency Melt, will explore upcoming regulatory requirements surrounding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Digital Product Passports (DPP), and their concrete implications for independent designers.

Her talk will provide an overview of definitions, timelines, and legal frameworks, and explain how EPR fees work and what obligations brands will face. A further focus will be on the requirements of the Digital Product Passport: What data will need to be collected in the future (materials, supply chains, harmful substances, care & repair, emissions, etc.) – and how to proceed when such data is not available, for example in the case of deadstock, upcycling, or second-hand materials.

The session will also address opportunities and challenges related to circularity, recyclability, circular design strategies, and packaging EPR. It will conclude with practical next steps and key timelines for independent labels.
