Fashion Award of the City of Vienna

The cultural department of the city of Vienna (MA7) and the Austrian Fashion Association announce the fashion award of the city of Vienna.

The award recognizes the work of emerging fashion designers and supports their sustainable development and professionalization at an international level.

It is granted for innovative fashion design in terms of concept and artistic work and aims to contribute to the establishment of a fashion label.

About

The Fashion Award of the City of Vienna addresses fashion designers whose work is already internationally recognized and who aim to scale their fashion label sustainably, both economically and ecologically.

Application process
Applications are submitted online via the website of the Austrian Fashion Association.
The two-stage jury evaluation is carried out by an internationally composed, independent expert jury.

Key criteria
The previous collections must demonstrate exceptional artistic quality and act as a reference for the positive perception of Austrian creative potential internationally.

Applications requirements
The applicant must have presented at least three collections publicly (not as part of their education).
Public presentations include participation in fairs or festivals, showroom or studio presentations, exhibition participation, performances, etc.
The collections must be available in retail, and publications in specialized magazines must be provided as evidence.
Eligible applicants are fashion designers who hold Austrian citizenship or permanent residency in Austria.

The Fashion Award of the City of Vienna is awarded based on the recommendation of an independent international expert jury. This jury changes annually and consists of representatives from various sectors of the fashion industry, including design, media, trade, art, education, research, and dissemination. The jury is appointed by the Austrian Fashion Association (AFA), with the final confirmation by the Culture Department of the City of Vienna (MA7) to ensure the jury’s independence.

 

While detailed feedback is not possible due to the large number of submissions, the AFA can provide oral feedback upon request regarding the jury’s decision. Separate consultation appointments with the AFA team can be arranged throughout the year.

 

The jury meeting usually takes place at the end of May. Results are typically announced via email within one week after the meeting.

No, the Fashion Award of the City of Vienna is tax-free according to the Arts Promotion Act. (Federal Law of February 25, 1988, on the Promotion of the Arts with Federal Funds) According to § 3 para. 3, only scholarships according to para. 1 item 5 and awards according to para. 1 item 7 are exempt from income tax.
